The global maritime sector is set to grow threefold by 2050 and is already responsible for 3% of the global GHG emissions. In order to completely decarbonise the maritime sector, there is also a need to decarbonise the port operations. Conventional cargo handling equipment currently uses diesel but can be decarbonised by switching to being powered by hydrogen (through fuel cells) or green electricity.
With hydrogen powered pilot plants underway in some major ports across the globe, we took a case study of an arbitrary port to calculate how much hydrogen is required to fuel an energy transition away from diesel. Since there are two decarbonisation options, we also look at what factors are crucial in order to take a decision on which may be the best method to adopt for port operation decarbonisation.
