The European Commission has given the green light to three voluntary schemes—CertifHy, ISCC – International Sustainability and Carbon Certification, and REDcert GmbH—to certify renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO).
RFNBOs are crucial for meeting the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive goals, aiming for:
- 1% of final energy consumption in transportation (RED III Transport)
- 42% of hydrogen used in industry (RED III Industry) by 2030
As fuel producers, suppliers, and end-users push for a transparent and verifiable framework, RFNBO certification will cover the entire fuel supply chain (“well-to-wheel”), ensuring utmost transparency and traceability.
Once officially recognized by the EU Commission, these schemes will enable renewable hydrogen and e-fuels producers to verify their products as RFNBO-compliant.
