Green Ammonia Co-Firing: Decarbonising Power Generation

December 13, 2023

Thermal generation is the largest source of power and heat today with around 60% of the energy mix dominated by fossil fuels. By retrofitting power plants with small modifications at low cost to co-fire ammonia (green ammonia), the fuel can be combusted alongside coal to generate power.

Ammonia co-firing has several advantages such as providing baseload power with a low-cost implementation making it perfect for regions with high number of thermal plants.

With pilot plants soon turning into a reality, we take a look at the major players in this sector and also review the countries making the most movement about implementing ammonia co-firing.
