Ammonia Cracking: Unlocking Green Hydrogen from Ammonia

With a majority of the major importers located far away from potential production hubs, there arises a question of what might be the best way to transport hydrogen over long distances. There are five existing ways of transporting hydrogen and considering the difficulties in transporting hydrogen and the potential costs, ammonia as a carrier and cracking it seems to be the promising option.

Ammonia cracking is the process of converting the ammonia back to hydrogen at scale, enabling green ammonia produced at one geography to be converted green hydrogen in another geography. Cracking is a carbon neutral process with an estimated added cost of around €1-2/kgH2.

With positive market developments in the recent past, cracking is a technology for the present and is set to be mainstream by 2028.
